Greenland Paddles

Measuring The Correct Overall Length:
The rule of thumb for measuring overall paddle length is to stand flat footed and reach up as high as possible with one hand bending your fingers as if hanging on a pull up bar. Measure from the ground to your bent fingers. This method helps determine a close approximation of the measurement needed for a comfortable efficient paddle. Remember, this is just a rule of thumb; the paddle can be made longer or shorter as desired. For example, I measure 86", but I use a paddle which is 88" just for a bit more bite on the water.

Loom Length:
The loom is measured by starting with your arms at your side and your elbows tight against your body. Bend your arms to form a 90 degree angle at the elbows. Now make the "ok" symbol with both hands. The measurement is taken from the center of one pointer finger on the left hand to the center of the pointer finger on the right hand. If you have a boat that is wider than 22" at the cockpit, you may want to go with a longer loom. Again, it is a matter of personal preference. Here you can see I measure up at 19.5".

Storm Paddles Measurements
Storm paddles are much shorter than standard Greenland Paddles with a shorter loom and are generally used with a sliding stroke. Around 72-74" is a typical length for a Storm paddle. The rule of thumb for loom length is two fists or 6-12". The Storm paddle is stored on the deck in the event you need it, therefore, it would be a good idea to measure the deck of your kayak to get an estimation of length. In some cases, your paddle may be as short as 60". |

Blade Width
The width of the blade can vary on Greenland Paddles, however, they generally don't exceed much more than 3.5". Most range from 3" to 3.5" in width at the widest section. If you want more pull on the water, a 3.5" paddle will be more to your liking. If you want less resistance, a 3" paddle will be more your style. Again, it is a matter of personal preference.

| As mentioned above, these measurements should be taken as a reference only. They are purely an estimate and will give you a good foundation to work from. Using these measurements, I would use an 86" paddle, however, I prefer the feel of a paddle which measures 88-90"and 3.5" in width. | |
